Project Overview
A busy outdoor shopping centre car park in Western Sydney had two pedestrian crossings positioned near an active vehicle access area. Traffic approached the crossings from three different directions, including passenger vehicles, delivery vans and trucks exiting a loading dock.
Due to the layout of the site, pedestrians could not always clearly see approaching vehicles. Large trucks leaving the loading dock presented a particular concern because of their size, limited visibility and wider turning movements.
Shopping centre management wanted a reliable system that would automatically warn pedestrians whenever vehicles were approaching the crossings.
The Safety Challenge
The pedestrian crossings were regularly used by shoppers, staff and contractors. At the same time, the surrounding roadway was used by passenger vehicles, delivery vehicles and heavy trucks.
The main safety concerns included:
- Vehicles approaching the crossings from three directions
- Large trucks exiting the loading dock
- Limited visibility between pedestrians and drivers
- Increased risk during busy shopping and delivery periods
- The need for an automatic warning system that did not rely on driver input
The client required a solution capable of detecting approaching vehicles and identifying larger vehicles leaving the loading dock, while providing a clear audio and visual warning to pedestrians.
The Solution
Smart Traffic Systems designed and supplied a vehicle-activated pedestrian warning system specifically for the car park layout.
The system included:
- Inductive loop vehicle detection
- Vehicle height detection sensors
- Audio-visual warning alarms
- Detection coverage for vehicles approaching from multiple directions
The induction loop detects vehicles travelling towards the pedestrian crossings. A height sensor provides additional detection for larger vehicles, including trucks leaving the loading dock.
When an approaching vehicle is detected, the system automatically activates the audio-visual alarms positioned near the pedestrian crossings.
This alerts pedestrians before the vehicle reaches the crossing, giving them additional time to stop, look and confirm that it is safe to proceed.
Detecting Large Vehicles and Trucks
Large vehicles can create a greater hazard in shopping centre car parks because they have larger blind spots, require more space to turn and may take longer to stop.
By combining an induction loop with a vehicle height sensor, the Smart Traffic Systems solution can identify larger vehicles and activate the warning system when trucks are leaving the loading dock.
This was particularly important at this site because delivery trucks travelled through the same area used by shoppers accessing the pedestrian crossings.
The Result
Following installation, pedestrians now receive a clear audio and visual warning whenever a vehicle or truck approaches the crossing area.
The system has improved safety by:
- Increasing pedestrian awareness
- Warning shoppers about vehicles they may not be able to see
- Reducing the risk created by trucks exiting the loading dock
- Providing automatic vehicle detection
- Supporting safer traffic movement around the shopping centre
- Improving safety without disrupting normal car park operation
The Western Sydney shopping centre now has a more effective pedestrian warning system that operates automatically throughout the day.
Custom Pedestrian Warning Systems for Car Parks
Every car park has a different layout, traffic pattern and level of risk. Smart Traffic Systems designs vehicle and pedestrian warning solutions for shopping centres, commercial buildings, loading docks, warehouses, apartment complexes, schools and industrial facilities.
Our systems can incorporate:
- Inductive loop detectors
- Infrared vehicle sensors
- Ultrasonic sensors
- Vehicle height detection
- Flashing warning lights
- Audible alarms
- LED warning signs
- Day and night operating modes
- Directional vehicle detection
- PLC-based control systems
Systems can be customised to detect passenger vehicles, trucks, forklifts or vehicles travelling in a particular direction.
Improve Pedestrian Safety at Your Site
Pedestrian crossings located near car park exits, loading docks, ramps or busy internal roads can present a significant safety risk.
